Half Marathon: Race Day Checklist

Mornings of half marathon races can be nerve-racking. It's very common to feel excited, a rush of adrenaline, and nervous on the morning of a half marathon! Which is why we recommend having a checklist for the morning, as it's easy to forget the essentials. So follow this checklist to prepare for your half marathon!

ONE: Wake Up Early

The first step to preparing for your half marathon is to wake up early. This gives you enough time to get ready, eat breakfast, and prepare for the race. You want to avoid adding unnecessary stress which can affect your performance. Aim to wake up at least two hours before the start of the race.

TWO: Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is essential to fuel your body for the race. You should aim for a meal that includes carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Some good options include oats with fruit and nuts, Weet-bix with banana, or even baked beans on toastEnsure you consume foods you eat on a regular basis to avoid digestive issues during the race!

THREE: Hydrate

Staying hydrated is crucial to your performance during the race. You should aim to drink at least 1 litre of water before the race starts. Consume a sports drink to get some extra electrolytes in to help replace the fluids lost during the race.

FOUR: Gear Check

Set out all of your running gear the night before, and you included a gear check a week in advance of your half marathon. As part of your half marathon race day preparation, do one last gear and outfit check.

  • Wear comfortable and moisture-wicking clothing that will keep you cool during the race.
  • Sounds a little over the top but individual toed socks are great to prevent blisters.
  • Charge your earphones and download your music if you decide to listen to music while running.
  • If you have your bib, attach it to your running shirt.
  • Pack all gels, and other race supplies the night before so you don't forget any of them!

FIVE: Logistic Check

Knowing the answers to these following questions in advance of the race day will definitely take some stress off of your plate...

  1. What's the travel time to the event?
  2. What's the best place to park?
  3. Are there wave start times? Do you know what wave you're in?
  4. If you're dropping a bag, do you know the procedures for drop off and pick up?
  5. Do you know the course (how many laps? elevation gain?)?
  6. How many aid stations are there? This can help you to determine how much water, gels, etc you'll need.

SIX: Warm Up (Use the Bathroom)

Give yourself at least 10 minutes to warm yourself up with dynamic stretching. This will ensure your body is feeling warm and ready to go, mitigating the risk of injury. Also USE THE BATHROOM before the race!

In conclusion, running a half marathon is an amazing accomplishment! On the morning of the race, make sure to wake up early, eat a healthy breakfast, hydrate, wear proper running gear, warm up, and go to the toilet before the race. By following these tips, you can ensure that you are ready to perform at your best!

Good luck!
